Granstone CIC is a small community interest organisation in Yorkshire that helps elderly and disabled people with practical home repairs and adaptations.
We focus on real, hands-on help — fixing problems that make everyday life harder or unsafe, especially for people who can no longer manage these jobs themselves.
Granstone was created after years of seeing the same problems repeated again and again.
It began with a simple moment — being asked to help a friend who had a disabled child. That experience showed how much difference practical, hands-on help can make, and how quickly people can be left struggling when that help isn’t available.
Over nearly 20 years working in the building trade, we saw the same pattern across many homes.
People who had worked their whole lives, paid into the system, raised families, and contributed to society were now living on low incomes, becoming less mobile, and struggling to keep their homes safe and usable.
These were not temporary homes or short-term situations.
They were places people had lived in for decades — homes full of memories, meaning, and attachment.
Growing older or living with a disability changes life in quiet, gradual ways.
Tasks that were once routine — fixing a loose step, tightening a handrail, dealing with a small leak, or even changing a lightbulb — can become difficult or unsafe. At the same time, income often reduces, leaving little room to pay for repairs.
This creates a common situation:
People can no longer do the work themselves
They cannot afford to pay someone else
Small problems are left unresolved
Over time, these small issues build up. What starts as a minor repair becomes a daily safety risk, affecting confidence, independence, and wellbeing.
Some people have family nearby.
Many do not.
Elderly people, families with disabled children, disabled adults, and those living alone often face the same reality — limited income, limited support, and problems that quietly accumulate.
This is how people are not forgotten all at once, but slowly left behind.
We believe that:
People should not have to live in unsafe or worsening conditions because of small, fixable problems
Practical help can prevent bigger health and safety issues later
Elderly and disabled people deserve dignity, respect, and support
Help should be personal, local, and hands-on
We believe strongly in giving back — especially to the generations who raised us.
Granstone is a small organisation with very low overheads and no heavy bureaucracy.
This means:
Donations go directly to helping people
Funds are used efficiently
Support stays local
We focus on practical solutions — not paperwork.
Support is provided based on need and available funding. While we cannot help everyone, we always aim to be honest, fair, and clear.
At the moment, we operate across Yorkshire and hope to help as many people as possible as we grow.
Our aim is simple:
To help elderly and disabled people live safely and comfortably in the homes they love, for as long as possible
This is the purpose of Granstone.
If you or a family member need support, you can contact us with confidence. We will listen and explain honestly whether we are able to help.
